Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 21, 2026
Bamboo is a note-taking app made by ZhiguiChen. We care about keeping your notes private and easy to understand.
The short version: Bamboo stores your notes on your device by default. We do not run a server that collects your notes, attachments, searches, or assistant conversations. Some features may send data to Apple or to services you choose to use, such as iCloud, the App Store, your AI provider, Unsplash, or a website you ask Bamboo to fetch.
What Bamboo Stores
Bamboo stores the information needed to make the app work, including:
- Your notes and Markdown content.
- Images, files, and other attachments you add.
- Collections, tags, links between notes, to-dos, reminders, and note history.
- App settings, such as editor appearance, sync, reminders, retention, and assistant preferences.
- Assistant chats and tool history if you use the assistant.
- Web clips if you save web content into Bamboo.
This data is stored on your device unless you choose to sync it, export it, back it up, or send it to another service through a feature you use.
iCloud Sync
iCloud Sync is optional.
If you turn on iCloud Sync, Bamboo syncs your notes and related app data through your Apple iCloud account so they can appear on your other devices.
We cannot read your iCloud notes. We do not have access to your Apple ID or your iCloud account. iCloud is provided by Apple, and Apple’s privacy policy applies to data stored and synced through iCloud.
Turning sync off on one device does not turn it off on every device. Check each device separately if you want to stop syncing everywhere.
Assistant and AI Features
Bamboo’s assistant only works after you choose and configure an AI provider.
When you use the assistant, Bamboo may send information to the AI provider you selected. This can include:
- Your message to the assistant.
- Relevant conversation history.
- Note content or search results you ask the assistant to use.
- Web page content if you ask the assistant to fetch a web page.
Bamboo does not send assistant requests through our own server. Requests go from the app to the provider you configured.
Before sending tool results to AI, Bamboo may warn you if the content appears to contain personal information. If Bamboo detects something that looks like a secret or credential, it can offer to redact it first.
Your AI provider may store or process the content you send according to its own privacy policy. Please review your provider’s policy before using AI features with sensitive notes.
API Keys
If you add an AI provider, Bamboo stores the API key in Keychain. The key is used only to contact the provider you configured. We do not receive your API keys.
Online Images and Web Fetching
Bamboo uses the internet only when a feature needs it. Examples include:
- Syncing with iCloud.
- Checking your App Store subscription status.
- Sending assistant requests to your AI provider.
- Searching Unsplash when you use the online image picker.
- Downloading remote images when you ask Bamboo to save them locally.
- Fetching a web page when you ask the assistant to read a URL.
When you search Unsplash, your search query is sent to Unsplash. When Bamboo fetches a website or downloads an image, that website or image host may receive normal network information such as your IP address and request details.
Browser Extension and Web Clipping
Bamboo Web Clipper helps you save web pages into Bamboo.
When the extension is enabled, your browser may give it permission to access websites so it can clip pages you choose. When you use the extension, it may read the current page so it can create a clip. The clip may include the page title, selected text, article content, URL, and related page information.
The extension sends the clipped content to the Bamboo app on your device. It does not send your clipped page content to us.
The extension does not send your browsing history to us.
The extension may use the clipboard as part of the clipping process, especially for larger clips or compatibility with browser behavior.
Clipboard
Bamboo uses the clipboard only when you choose an action that needs it, such as copying a note link, copying assistant output, copying code, or importing a web clip from the clipboard.
Bamboo does not continuously monitor your clipboard.
Files, Photos, Camera, and Scanning
Bamboo accesses files, photos, camera input, or document scanning only when you choose actions such as:
- Importing notes.
- Adding an attachment.
- Picking an image.
- Taking a photo.
- Scanning a document.
- Exporting notes.
- Creating or restoring a backup.
Files and attachments you import are stored in Bamboo. If iCloud Sync is enabled, they may also sync through your iCloud account.
Notifications
If you enable reminder notifications, Bamboo uses system notifications to remind you about reminders in your notes. You can turn this off in Bamboo settings or in your system notification settings.
Widgets and Automation
Bamboo widgets and local automation tools can access your Bamboo notes on the same device so they can show notes, open notes, search notes, or update to-dos.
If you use Bamboo’s command-line or automation features, only connect them to tools you trust, because those tools may be able to read or change your Bamboo data.
Subscriptions
Bamboo Pro subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store.
Bamboo Pro is available as an auto-renewable monthly or yearly subscription. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings.
We do not receive your payment card details. Bamboo only checks whether your subscription is active so it can unlock Pro features.
Analytics and Tracking
Bamboo does not include third-party analytics or advertising tracking. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Apple services and third-party services you choose to use, such as iCloud, the App Store, AI providers, Unsplash, or websites you fetch, may handle data under their own privacy policies.
Deleting Your Data
You control your Bamboo data.
Inside Bamboo, you can:
- Delete notes or move them to Trash.
- Restore notes from Trash.
- Permanently delete notes from Trash.
- Set cleanup rules for Trash and version history.
- Export your notes.
- Create a Bamboo backup.
- Restore a Bamboo backup.
- Reset local data on supported devices.
Resetting local data removes data from the current device. It does not automatically delete data already stored in iCloud or on other devices.
Security
Bamboo uses Apple platform protections to store local data and protect sensitive items such as AI provider keys.
No app or online service can guarantee perfect security. Please protect your Apple ID, exported files, backups, and AI provider accounts, and be careful when sending sensitive notes to third-party services.
Children’s Privacy
Bamboo is a general productivity app and is not made specifically for children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the updated version on this page and change the effective date.
